Creating a ‘Life Story’ with a Dementia Sufferer

Dementia is an illness which is cruel and upsetting. Whether you have been diagnosed, or for family and friends of a person who has been diagnosed, it is one of the most heart-breaking things to go through, as a person is robbed of their memories, their experience and ultimately all the things that make them who they are.

People who are diagnosed with dementia will often need to be cared for at somewhere like this care home Bridgwater based Notaro, where the staff ae experienced in dealing with the illness and caring for and keeping safe people who suffer from it.

Although there is no cure for the disease, there are ways that you can help a person who is suffering from dementia. One of these is by doing life story work.

This is helping the person to go through their memories of who they are, their experiences and their favourite things to help create the story of their life. There are many ways that you can do this and you can even mix a few- create a book, make a collage, record an audio tape, or make a memory box full of special trinkets of their life.

This is something which is a lovely bonding activity to do with a loved one, and it can be done over a long period of time, as the person may need to take breaks, or become distressed at times. It can be done in any order; go with the flow of the person whose story it is.
