Emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time. If someone has become trapped and is in need of rescue, it is important to stay calm and assist them in the best way possible.
1. Rope Rescue
If someone has fallen into a small space, then they will need to be pulled out safely. Should no emergency personnel be on their way and the person is in immediate danger, they should be extracted if possible. If they are able to move, then a rope should be lowered for them to grasp. Should a job site have areas that are potentially dangerous to employees, then staff members should take rope rescue classes to learn how to assist each other in an emergency.
2. Water
Someone who is in the water without safety equipment may begin to drown. Make sure that any rescue attempt will not endanger more lives, as rescuing a drowning person can be difficult. Throw them a floatation device if one is available. If not, try to reach for them with a long stick, or a rope that they can grab to be pulled to safety. After the person has been pulled out of the water, check their breathing. If they are not responsive, then have someone call 911. CPR can be administered by someone who has been properly trained as needed.
3. Ice
Skating around on a frozen lake has been a favorite pastime of many people for decades. The ice should be checked before use to ensure it is the proper thickness to support the weight of a human. If someone does fall through the ice, they should be thrown a rope. If no rope is handy, then clothing knotted together may serve the same purpose. Lie down on the ice to spread out weight evenly in an attempt to prevent the ice from breaking further.
Before engaging in activities that may contain risks, research different ways to overcome any emergencies that could arise. Being prepared is one of the best ways to save lives.
