Bird proofing is a mesh barrier that keeps birds from nesting under your solar. Whether you would like it or not will very much depend on the location, type of roof, and whether birds are likely to consider your panels as a nesting opportunity. Raised a bit above the roof to create that warm, protected gap. Pigeons will, in particular, make their nests there, more so on quieter streets and near parks, warehouses, or farmland. Things that you may not realise until they move in:
Disturbance (scratching and cooing) frequently occurs early in the morning
Blocked gutters and drainage
Greater likelihood of roof wear and tear
Less airflow around panels, possibly compromising performance in hot conditions
Do you always need protection?
Not always. Even those with an easy-to-access roof may never even see their first sighting due to the limited amount of remaining space, keeping in mind that most configurations optimally place solar panels close together, efficiently capturing as much sunlight as possible.
However, when pigeons are seen on the roof or nesting material is found, and droppings begin accumulating below, array bird proofing becomes worthwhile sooner rather than later. Nip nesting in the bud. Nesting is much easier (and cheaper) to prevent than it is to try to remove once established.
What to look for
A proper install will include a long lasting corrosive-resistant mesh which is fixed to the solar frame and not the roof tiles. It is really a win-win, as when done correctly, it will not destroy the system and can save you years of hardship.
