Interval training is based on periods of intense exercise followed by rest intervals of the same duration. Imagine 30 seconds running, followed by 30 seconds resting or walking. This is similar to the Couch-to-5K programme.

You can choose to do a short interval workout that suits you, or you can go all out on the rowing machine, assault bike, or other fitness equipment. The Science of Interval Training

  • As fitness improves, you can increase the intensity or speed of your workout.
    You can do interval training in any environment, including at home, the gym, or on the road. For example, interval workouts can consist of 30 seconds of work followed by 30 seconds of rest. Or, they can include running for one to two minutes followed by two minutes’ rest. The exercises can include a wide range of movements such as:

    • Tuck jumps are also known as jumping jacks or burpees
    • Sprint training such as uphill or ladders
    • Shuttle runs, jogging and skipping
    • Exercise bikes and other cardio equipment are available.
  • You can exert more energy by maintaining a high heart rate, but allowing yourself time to recover. This is better than trying to maintain a moderate level of effort for an extended period.
