Here are some of the most popular dishes found worldwide (some of which you may not have heard of) that you may want to try on your travels to each particular  country or if you are lucky enough to dine in a country specific restaurant.

Hainanese chicken rice

This is a dish that is popular in Singapore and is a delicate but complex one. The rice is cooked in a stock that is made from the chicken. The chicken breast itself is poached in spices and all is served with a garlic and chilli dip.

Falafel

Served in a number of countries across the world including Israel and Egypt, Falafel are often sold as a street style food, mainly from street vendors. They are also found in many restaurants and hotels across the regions. They are in essence bite sized balls that are made from chickpeas that are fried along with a mixture of onions, coriander, parsley and cumin. They are often served with an accompaniment of hummus, tahini and pickled cucumbers and tomatoes.

Salt and Pepper Squid

A popular dish in Australia, if you are a lover of seafood this is one dish you should definitely try and you will find it on the menu in most restaurant in the country. The squid is rolled in flour and the salt and pepper mixture and then quick fried until it is golden and crispy. It is usually served in a basket alongside a nice cold pint of beer.

Smorrebrod

This is essentially a Danish take on an open sandwich. Made from traditional dark bread with a healthy spreading of butter this open sandwich can be topped with a cheese, smoked salmon, herring roast pork or a variety of pickled vegetables. The options are virtually endless.

Most countries across the world will have a national dish and this may also be the dish that is most popular for tourists to try but in some instances these will be two very different dishes.
